NativHawks Welcome Jose Alvarado to the Staff

The Windy City NativHawks welcome Jose Alvarado to the staff as the new Overseas / Scouts / Recruiting Coordinator and Team Advisor. Mr. Alvarado is a prior American Basketball Association (ABA) team owner and is now involved with the Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF).

Team owner Chadwick Atkins recently sat down with Jose for an interview.

Q. What are your best moments in your basketball career, playing time experience, and business experience?

A. One of the highlights of my basketball career was playing as both a point guard and a shooting guard. One of my proudest achievements was setting the youth league record for the most points scored in a single game with 36 points. That accomplishment reflected the hard work and dedication I put into the game.

In 2010, I became a head coach for the first time with the San Antonio Alamo. Although we didn't win the championship, we were honored with the Team Sportsmanship of the Year Award, which was a meaningful achievement because it reflected our character, unity, and respect for the game.

In 2014, I joined the ATX Warriors as head coach. During my time there, we compiled a 45–6 record, won four SWBAD championships, captured two NDBO championships, and finished as runners-up twice in the USADB Finals. Those experiences reinforced my belief that strong leadership, player development, and teamwork are the keys to sustained success.

From a business perspective, my passion has always been building programs that create opportunities for athletes. I enjoy developing organizations, strengthening partnerships, organizing events and camps, and helping create pathways for players to reach the next level. I believe the greatest investment is investing in people and providing them with the tools to succeed.

After retiring from coaching, I shifted my primary focus to youth basketball programs and camps. My mission is to mentor the next generation, develop future leaders, and ensure that young athletes have opportunities to grow both on and off the court.

Q. What can you do for this organization since you’re overseas?

A. Even while I'm overseas, I can continue contributing through communication, networking, strategic planning, mentoring, and building partnerships. Technology allows us to stay connected, so distance doesn't limit my ability to support the organization's growth and represent its values internationally.

I also hope to share my experience in player development, coaching, and program building to help strengthen the organization both on and off the court. Whether it's creating new opportunities, expanding our network, or helping develop future leaders, I'm committed to contributing wherever I'm needed. My goal is to help NativHawks build a strong foundation for long-term success.

Q. I know you have experience with the SWBAD and ABA. What’s your most valuable experience with assets that you could give to anyone who’s wanting to invest in themselves?

A. The most valuable lesson I've learned from my experiences with SWBAD, ABA, USADB, and NDBO is that investing in yourself is the best investment you can make. Continue learning, develop your leadership skills, stay humble, and never stop improving your game, your knowledge, and your character.

Success doesn't happen overnight. It comes from discipline, consistency, and a willingness to learn from both victories and setbacks. Build meaningful relationships, be a great teammate, and always look for ways to give back to others. When you invest in yourself as a player, a coach, a leader, and a person, you'll be prepared when opportunities come your way.

That's the mindset I've carried throughout my basketball journey, and it's the same message I want to pass on to the next generation.

Q. How can the Windy City NativHawks benefit from having you as a part of this organization? What is your mission for the NativHawks right now?

A. I believe the NativHawks can benefit from my leadership, professionalism, and years of experience as a player, head coach, and program developer. My goal is to help strengthen the organization's culture, support player development, mentor coaches and athletes, and build positive relationships within the community.

I also want to contribute new ideas, create opportunities for growth, and help establish a foundation for long-term success. Above all, I want to serve the organization with integrity, lead by example, and help the NativHawks reach its full potential both on and off the court.
